- [S14] Dødsannonce. Ramona K. "Mona" Johnson, 86 of Rockford passed away Friday, February 22, 2008. Born July 18, 1921 in Fairmont, MN the daughter of Emmanuel and Anne (Knudsen) Nielsen. She married Willard Johnson in Chicago. He predeceased her on December 23, 2004. Mona was a caregiver for many Rockford area children. She also loved dogs and raised Poodles and Yorkshire Terriers. In Chicago, Ramona worked for the Sisters at St. Killian Catholic Church and also worked at the Palmer House Hotel. Ramona is survived by her grandchildren Christopher, Jennifer, James "Jamie" Johnson and one great grandson. Siblings Betty Akers, Laura Mercanti and George Nielsen. Mona is also survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews and special friends. The Olson and Lake families had the opportunity to spend many loving moments with Mona. Predeceased by her parents, husband and children Jefferey W. and James R. Johnson. Her twin brother Rignald "Reggie", brothers Earl, Adolph and Barney. Following Mona's death, her sister Una Arnbal died one day later. Special thanks to her special friends and the staff at Anam Care and River Bluff. The family would also like to extend thanks to Van Mader, Alden Alma Nelson and St. Anne's Center. Funeral Service will be Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. in Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave., with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Interment will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

- [S14] Dødsannonce. Una M. Arnbal, 81, of Ames, died Saturday, Feb. 23, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m., with a memorial service at 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, at Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Una M. Arnbal was born April 22, 1926, in Hollandale, Minn., one of nine children born to Anne (Ane) Knudsen Nielsen and Emmanuel K. A. Nielsen. Her parents were born in Denmark and immigrated to the United States prior to World War I - they met on a ship bound for America. Over the years, Una and her family have kept close ties to their Danish cousins who live on the Jutland peninsula. She married Carl Anton Arnbal Aug. 31, 1946, with lasting love and devotion.
Una was full of elegance, grace, charm and joy of life. Family was the foundation of her life, beginning with her childhood in southern Minnesota and her poignant memories of a close-knit family growing up on a farm near Albert Lea during the Depression and war years. Her family was generous and sharing, and her parents often would bring into their home the less fortunate, even whole families, for long periods of time. She grew to love a former neighbor boy, Carl, a student at the University of Minnesota, and they were married following his college graduation. After living in Manhattan, Kan., where Carl did his graduate work at Kansas State University, they ultimately settled in Ames in 1953. They raised three daughters in Ames and have remained community residents ever since. Outside of her devotion to her family, she loved to collect antiques of all kinds, and Carl and she were partners in their Woodland Antiques business for three decades! She avidly followed politics throughout her life. Carl and she enjoyed rooting passionately for Iowa State women's basketball and have long held season tickets in Hilton's Section 134. She was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Carl; three daughters, Judith (Thomas) Brayton, Olivia Arnbal Madison (Gregory Palermo), and Carla Gholson; two sisters, Betty Porter and Laura Mercanti; one brother, George (Florence) Nielsen; and many cousins, including her Danish cousins, Poul Erik (Ruth) Christensen and Anna Knudsen Hansen. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Christopher (Kimberley) Palermo and Mark Palermo (Kirsten Hartwig); and one great-grandchild, Sebastian Palermo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mona Johnson; four brothers, Adolph, Earl, Reginald and Arnold (Barney); one son-in-law, Larry Gholson; and a half-brother, Jens Peter Nielsen.
